ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA, SHRI RAM NATH KOVIND ON THE OCCASION OF UNVEILING OF STATUE OF MAHATMA GANDHI AT DAKSHINA BHARAT HINDI PRACHAR SABHA

1. நமது நாட்டில் எனக்குப்பிடித்த மாநிலங்களில் ஒன்றான தமிழ்நாட்டுக்கு மீண்டும் வருவதில் மிக்க மகிழ்ச்சி. மிக அழகிய தமிழ்மொழி, செம்மையான கலாச்சாரம், தொன்மையான வரலாறு, திறமையுடன் கடுமையாக உழைக்கும் மக்கள் ஆகிய சிறப்புகளைக்கொண்டது தமிழ்நாடு.
2. தேசத்தந்தை மகாத்மா காந்தி அவர்களால் நிறுவப்பட்ட தக்ஷிண பாரத ஹிந்தி பிரச்சார சபாவின் இந்த வளாகத்தில் உங்களின் நடுவில் இருப்பது எனக்கு மிகுந்த மகிழ்ச்சியை அளிக்கிறது. காந்திஜியின் சிலையை திறப்பதின் மூலம் நான் மிக்க பெருமிதம் கொள்கிறேன்.

3. Mahatma Gandhi always urged north Indians to learn the languages and scripts of our southern states. In the same spirit, he also set up the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha. It is a matter of immense happiness that this Prachar Sabha has completed hundred years working for the promotion of Hindi in our southern states. This building is all the more important because Mahatma Gandhi lived here for 10 days in the year 1946. By putting up a statue of Mahatma Gandhi here, you have paid respects to the values of the Father of the Nation. I congratulate you for this.
4. This year the world is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. On my visits to countries across the world, I have participated in several events related to Gandhiji. Everywhere I have felt a deep respect for him. Truly, Gandhiji’s appeal is universal.
5. Learning the language of another region or another state can be very educative. It can open a window to a culture that is at once familiar and new. In Delhi, I have observed cases of north Indian school-children learning Tamil. Twinning programmes between different states are popularising the language of one region in another. Such steps reinforce national harmony.
6. During our freedom movement, the poetry of Subramania Bharati inspired not just people here in Tamil Nadu but all over the country. In the same manner, the liberating ideas of Periyar – one of our foremost advocates of human dignity – were not limited by language or geography. I must also recall that two of my predecessors in Rashtrapati Bhavan, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, who was our last Governor-General, and President R. Venkataraman, were multilingual intellectuals from Tamil Nadu whose contributions and ideas went beyond any one language or region.
7. There is another and more practical benefit to learning languages of other states. We live in an age when a growing Indian economy is leading to significant internal migration. Young men and women from one part of the country are studying or working and adding value to another part of the country. Tamils work in Uttar Pradesh, Biharis find employment in Tamil Nadu; a talented young lady from Mizoram may be studying in Kerala, and a young man from Andhra Pradesh may be building his career in Assam. There are millions of examples. In such cases, knowing the language of the state or region you are located in can only be an asset. It adds value to your CV – and it adds value to our India.

8. भारत की विभिन्न भाषाएँ हम सबको एक दूसरे से जोड़ती हैं।भाषाओं की विविधता हमारे देश की पहचान है और ताकत भी।प्राचीन काल से ही, तमिल भाषा ने पूरे देश की संस्कृति, साहित्य और चिन्तन को प्रभावित किया है।स्वतन्त्रता संग्राम के दौरान महाकवि सुब्रह्मण्य भारती की देशप्रेम से भरी तमिल कविताओं ने पूरे देश में प्रेरणा का संचार किया था।उन्होंने हिन्दी भाषा के प्रचार के लिए भी कार्य किया था। जिस तरह तमिल भाषी महाकवि भारती ने हिन्दी भाषा के प्रचार को प्रोत्साहित किया उसी तरह गुजराती भाषी महात्मा गांधी ने भी हिन्दी भाषा के प्रसार को अपने रचनात्मक कार्यों में शामिल किया।इन राष्ट्र निर्माताओं ने पूरे देश को एकता के धागे में पिरोने के लिए भाषाओं का उपयोग किया।
9. अनेक भाषाएँ हमारे देश को समृद्ध करती हैं।इन भाषाओं में, हमारी संस्कृति की अनेक धाराएँ प्रवाहित होती हैं।इन सभी धाराओं के मिलने से हमारे देश की सामासिक संस्कृति का स्वरूप उभरता है।महात्मा गांधी ने निरंतर यह प्रयास किया था कि देश के विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में रहने वाले भारतवासियों के बीच पारस्परिक संवाद बने और विचारों का आदान-प्रदान बढ़े।वे मानते थे कि ऐसा होने से देशवासियों के बीच घनिष्ठताब ढ़ेगी।उन्होंने समझाया कि ऐसी घनिष्ठता को मजबूत बनाने के लिए विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में रहने वाले देशवासियों द्वारा एक दूसरे की भाषाओं को सीखना सहायक सिद्ध होगा।इसीलिए, उन्होंने न केवल ‘दक्षिण भारत हिन्दी प्रचार सभा’ की स्थापना की अपितु इस बात पर भी ज़ोर दिया कि उत्तर भारत तथा देश के अन्य क्षेत्रों में, तमिल समेत सभी भारतीय भाषाओं की शिक्षा का प्रसार हो।गांधी जी की सोच पर आधारित ऐसे भाषा संबंधी प्रयासों को जारी रखना बहुत उपयोगी सिद्ध होगा।
10. With those words, and with the confidence that the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha will take forward its great legacy as well as encourage similar institutions to promote other Indian languages in different parts of our country, I wish you all the best.
